And billions on providing services....

Over 20 years ago there was no cap on rates and things could be properly funded. The rates on my house across the road from where I now live in 1987 represented 0.75% of its capital value. The council tax this year on my house is about 0.3%.

I'd be interested to know of a London borough where the allowances paid to local councillors are lower.

I would also like to know whether the leader of the opposition (who like 2 other Tories serves on no major council committee) refuses to take his council basic allowance, his special responsibility allowance as leader of the opposition, or his allowance as a GLA member. I don't think so.

If you want people to stand as councillors who are not retired, in receipt of a private income, or supported financially by their partners; then you do need to pay decent allowances. Given that being a cabinet member is the equivalent of about 3-4 days a week full time, I am not convinced that the allowance is generous.

By the way, Mr B, any news on that collective enfranchisement point?
