The last part about experimenting with new electoiral mechanisms is worrying. I've been unable to trace the press release on the DTLR website. Can you be more specific on how to access it?
Back to the issue of a mayor for Richmond. I can't recall the question ever being put to us as a choice to vote for. What was the consultation and wording that led to a decision of a cabinet structure being the preferred model?
Despite your reservations, the mayor issue should still be given serious consideration. On possible corruption, surely checking and accountability mechanisms can be put in place to try and prevent that. Remember, under our current set up, there are many allegations of corruption but no one seems able to do anything about it.
On the positive side, an appeal that probably helped for a more favourable response last Thursday, was the Rudy Guillani effect and a vision of what one person with the right qualities can achieve. Also look at the Ray Mallon effect in Middlesborough, respected by many for his work as a police officer and clearing crime rates, the referendum was 5 to 1 in favour, with him in mind. A dynamic leader focuses responsibility and provides a more public and accountable face.
The ideal candidate would not be a councillor but someone with a good track record of serving the community in some capacity – from the police, fire, hospital, school, community care, to give just a few examples. A person with a dynamic personality - do we have such people in the borough of Richmond?
If this can't arouse an interest then what does everyone expect after next May that will improve our lot? No overall control by any party is the more realisitc expectation but none of us can be sure of what that will actually mean in reality. Otherwise, plod on as usual and keep on complaining! |
