I see today that after an initially poor start in the first batch of referendums, 4 out of 5 borough elections held yesterday voted in favour of a mayor. The aim is to improve local democracy, re-engage the electorate and reduce the apathy factor. Do others see this as potentially a good thing for Richmond and when is a referendum scheduled for our borough? Could this improve things here? More information on the following weblink:

One common theme I've noted that comes up time and again whether on this forum, the community websites or the local papers, is the issue of all consultations in our borough being a sham and either fiddled or simply ignored.
That's what many find frustrating and maybe why others don't bother to vote - they don't believe it will make any difference.

That should be the main non political platform for change and perhaps an elected mayor could be just the fresh impetus to drive that forward. It may re-engage the public with a genuine participation in all matters affecting our schools, amenities, development, environment, community care and everyday life, that just maybe could make local affairs exciting and worthwhile. Pure fantasy or realistically achievable?
