First of all, we were not talking about Lib Dem policy, but the alleged connections of a former Lib Dem councillor.

But to answer your question, I do not feel impelled to support decisions made many years ago without my input. I would defend them only if they are in accordance with current policy and practice. I would not expect a Labour councillor to support a Foot line on EU membership or nuclear disarmament, especially if they had not even been a member of the Labour party at the time. I would not attack him or her because of these views held by other people, or because of the actions of others.

I also believe that representatives of the people should be elected on their own personal records (which of course include their adherence to a set of party policies and the degree of such adherence).

There is a point where the decisions of those who went before but had the same label do begin to fade away into history. Where that is does depend on how people feel. I have to say that whether or not a former councillor declared an interest 14 or more years ago must be the other side of that point so far as current councillors are concerned.
