We hear a lot about consultation. They don't tell us. They don't listen to us etc.

Some of the criticism is well founded and clear. Advertisement is often poor; the Council lost a Court case over poor consultation on a Toucan crossing in St. Margarets. It is also clear beyond doubt that some issues are decided before a proper consultation takes place. I am presently looking into another instance of this.

On the other hand, when the rants crop up, I invariably wonder to what extent those who moan have ever tried to get the World at large to take an interest in any political issue that had not previously engaged their concern. Words are cheap. Voluntary action is a scarce commodity. Perhaps Richard Meacock will tell us the sum total of whatever financial contributions to his Ice Rink campaign?

This comment is provoked by a recent fuss over what should or should not have been sent out in envelopes and Trevor Clarke's naive and ignorant hope of resurrecting a campaign to elect a local Mayor. I am sorry, Sir, to have to say this but .... (you get the gist).

On the whole, in matters of consultation, the supply far exceeds the demand. Some heads and pockets may indeed be getting fat on corruption but on the whole our local Councils are shriveling up like dried prunes for what of public empathy.

Furthermore, this unfortunate situation will only improve when contributors to this site, and others of the ilk, own up to it instead of perpetually appearing to demand an increase in the spoonfeed supply of propaganda to those who have already, so to speak, grown to be very fat, slow and stupid from the same.

The Council had a proper consultation proceedure, the committee system. It is now all but deceased and very distorted. World at large did not want to know. Compare the quality of the recent records of current meetings with the hard bound versions to be found in the local studies library collection (if they have not yet thrown them out). It is a sorry tale.

With best wishes,
Ron Harvey
