I will try to give a very brief update with ESWT
so that you can offer this to your patient
1. This is an FDA approved procedure. It has been shown to be both safe and effective. The term investigional and experimental are terms used for non-fda approved proedures
2. ESWT was approved thru the FDA process at Harvard, Emory, Henry Ford and Kennedy Fowler institute. I don't think we need to review the quality of these institutions
3. There have been over 10,000 ESWT procedure performed for Chronic Plantar Fascitiis in the USA since FDA approval. Europe and Canada over fifty thousand over the past ten years if you include other tendon conditions.
4. Many insurance companies pay for ESWT
5. There are none of the risks with ESWT that have been seen with pf ( even EPF ) . Some of the pf risks are infection, nerve damage , stress fracture, RSD and permament foot pain,cuboid-calcaneal snydrome.
ESWT is part of the treatment protocol for the ACFAS. This as you know is an organization consisting of board certified podiatrist.
