If you indeed have only Haglund's deformity, sometimes termed "pump bumps," the only reason that I would think an MRI useful would be to see if there are any degenerative areas in the Achilles tendon. But I think I would evaluate you additionally for both the presents of osteoarthritic proliferations at the insertion of the Achilles tendon and retrocalcaneal bursitis. Pain from shoe contact is the essential symptoms with which most, if not all patient with Haglund's deformity present, although pain produced also on motion of the ankle joint is not uncommon. Heel lifts can be somewhat effective for reducing tension on the tendon, but mainly they lift the bump higher than the counter of the shoe, thus avoiding direct contact between shoe and bump. NSAID such as you have been prescribed can be useful for symptoms, though I am not personally (though others may be) a fan of the use of heat. From what you have related, I would be surprised if your problem were exclusively that of a typical Haglund's deformity.
