If the bone is cut and repositioned in bunion surgery it should usually be fixated or held in place with a pin or screw. If this bone cut is done at the base of the bone (near the arch) a cast is most commonly recommended with non weight bearing for several weeks. An example of this is a Lapidus procedure. If this is done as a bilateral procedure, most surgeons would require non-weight bearing with bedrest and a wheelchair. Yes, going to the bathroom is going to be difficult. If the bone cut is done at the head of the metatarsal (near the toe) fixation is more stable and walking on it is usually allowed. All patients should ask their surgeons what procedure is being done, where will the bone be cut (head or base), what type of fixation will be used, and will weight bearing be allowed.
Knowing these answere will make it easier to determine if a bilateral (both feet) surgery is feasible. RGB |
