Your intitial description DID sound as if a stress fracture was consider. Stress fractures do not always show up on standard x-rays for a couple to several weeks and that is probably why you had several x-rays. An MRI and/or a bone scan can frequently make the diagnosis much sooner, but in my opinion, in most case, the cost does not warrant their immediate use in such a case. But fractures of metatarsals will generally heal within 6-8 weeks unless there is a malunion problem which would have shown by now even on a standard x-ray. I don't know what the red spots might have been or if they are associated with the foot pain. But I do agree that it is time for a second opinion based on the fact that your doctor has not been able to come up with anything concrete regarding this matter. Forums such as this are generally not appropriate venues for the offering of a diagnosis, as sufficient information can rarely be made available.
