I truly think that you're making more of a big deal over having this surgery than needs to be, but that's not to say that any surgery, or in fact your next ride in an automobile, does not present a certain degree of risk. We tend to assess risk on a rather capricious basis, and frequently we accept REAL risk easier than unlikely risk.

If, indeed, it is a fracture . . and I'm not sold on that . . I agree that it would have almost certainly healed in nine months if it were going to heal.

As far as taking only a portion of the sesamoid out, I've expressed my opinion that I would prefer a total sesamoidectomy.

As far as post-operative pain is concerned, I have not found that those I've operated on for sesamoid removal have been in a whole lot of pain . . but pain often has more to do with the patient than the doctor or even the procedure.

One word of caution though. It has been my experience that patients' concerns of both severe pain and complications are often self-fulfilling prophecies, which cannot be accounted for merely by random chance. So, if you have the surgery, go in with a good possitive attitude.
