Actually, bunions are definitely the cause here. In both cases, the bunions would be shaved off as well. According to one doctor (the Green-Watermann preferred), I have a bunion not only on the outside of my foot (big toe) but also on top of my big toe, in what he describes as a "door jam"...not allowing flexion which is creating the capsulitis. As long as you're throwing latin terms around, what is the difference between HALLUX LIMITUS, HALLUX VALGUS, and HALLUX RIGIDIS (which I have heard from both doctors). Also, is there a "rule of thumb" for choosing a PODIATRIST vs. an ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON????
Thx for replying.

I do my best to refrain from using medical lingo in a lay forum without also giving an explanation in common terms . . generally in parenthesis. But occasionally the medical terms (or as you have termed them, the "Latin") are so much more concise and to the point that I use them in preference to lengthy descriptive language.

HALLUX VALGUS refers to the deviation of the hallux (great toe) in the direction of the 5th toe. (AWAY from the mid-line of the body)

HALLUX VARUS refers to the hallux deviating away from the direction of the 5th toe (TOWARD the mid-line of the body)

HALLUX LIMITUS refers to a decrease from the norm in the range of motion of the great toe . . generally in an upward (dorsiflectory) direction.

HALLUX RIGIDUS refers to a rigid hallux . . One which has virtually zero range of motion can take place. This may be due to bony or soft tissue blockage or pathologic fusion of the joint.

Of the last two . . hallux limitus is generally more painful, as partial motion which is abruptly stopped is almost always far more painful than no motion at all. That's why fusions are sometimes preferred for such joint pathology.
