I have mild bunions on both feet. However, only my left foot has pain in the joint near the bunion, especially after wearing high heel shoes. My doctor has told me that the pain is from arthritis and bunion surgery will not help with that type pain. (Even thought my xrays show space in the joint area and does not appear to be arthritic.) I would like a second opinion. Could bunion surgery help with arthritis pain?

It is generally true that bunion surgery will not help great-toe-joint osteoarthritis pain, but there are generally classical radiologic indications of osteo-arthritis of a joint, and if none are present, I would question as to whether arthritis is the source of your pain.
Is the upward range of motion normal in scope? Does direct pressure with a finger on top of the joint elicit pain? It may simply be joint bursitis.
But I still would not recommend bunion surgery unless it were clearly established that the mild bunions were causing some sort of symptoms which you did not wish to tolerate. |
