I have used a metatarsal osteotomy with cases where there is elongation and plantarflexion of the involved metatarsal. It is indicated in specific clinical situation. A excision of a neuroma is also a very good choice. Both procedures in the proper patient and in the hands of an experienced foot surgery will yield good results. I have post osteotomy cases twenty five years. I have used this procedure on my grandmother. The key is knowing when to use the procedure and how to use the procedure.
A proper work up and in-depth clinical evaluation is a must before any decision to choice a specifice procedure.
Another procedure that could be extremely benefical to our patients is cryotherapy. The beauty of this procedure is the miminial incision approach the lack of serious complications as can and odes happen with both a metatarsal bone cutting procedure and or a cutting out of the nerve in the foot.
