Beware that the main complaints about the Twickenham Riverside affair relate to finance, consultation and party political motivations. None of these are issues that a planning Inquiry would explore, their remit being strictly limited. It is almost always a clutching of straws to call for "call ins". Special Inquiries are scarce. As I recall it there are only about 146 'call ins' between 356 local authorities per year. Do the arithmetic. Work out the odds.

Talk to your local MP or elect another one. The greatest need is for a general political review of the way that Councils administer planning applications for land that they own. By the time we get one, the Councils will no longer own any land but it is still worth a shout.

Other cases relate to the same problem: Mr. Berend is chasing the Twickenham Golf Course application.

Another case goes to Committee this Thursday: housing on the Mill Farm Site, next to the new mail distribution centre. Compare the way that the Council deals with this, with the history of similar sites privately owned, e.g. the derelict allotment next to Twickenham Bridge.

The truth is that there is no ready made remedy or effective remedial agency. One has yet to be invented. Perhaps clever Trevor (Eel Pie resident) will come up with something. A prime time mass media campaign may make a difference. Anything less is unlikely to.

With best wishes,

Ron Harvey
