I am a web site designer and I live in the borough, in Barnes. I totally agree with the recent correspondence on this Watchdog about the awful state of Richmond Council's web site. It is a very poorly made and managed site which has been offline more than it has been online this year. For months now I have been seeing on the home page they have two banners claiming website accolades. One is a Nominated banner for a New Statesman award and the other is a shortlist banner for the Spin award. These are really embarassing and each time I visit the site I have been hoping they would have been removed. But not so, they remain a testament to Council ignorance.
As anyone with an elementary knowledge of web production will tell you, these banners are utterly meaningless. They are not awards Richmond.gov has won. It is an insult to the people of Richmond Borough to keep such banners online and pretend it is an achievement. Richmond.gov was probably nominated by someone in their IT dept as I cant see anyone else having the audacity to nominate it. Any individual can nominate a site so thousands are nominated for New Statesman awards, you celebrate if you win an award not if you are nominated. These banners have been on the Richmond.gov homepage for ages. The awards were judged months ago and of course Richmond didn't win, they couldn't possibly get anything, not even runner-up. For goodness sake Council, have some decency and remove these embarassments. The level of ignorance in Richmond Council about almost everything is astounding.
