This Wednesday there is a Waste Summit organised by our glorious Government with the aid of the 'Prime Minister's Advisory Team'.Richmond's Municipal Solid Waste(MSW) which is meant to be recycled etc goes to Bedford to be landfilled: The most barbaric form of 'disposal' known:Polluting the land AND the water table. So much for its bragging. The European Union Directive to recycle triple what we do now Nationally by 2010 is the problem upsetting New Labour, because they have done NOTHING other than cosy up to Incinerator manufacturers. Incineration is NOT recycling. It produces toxic ash and pollutes the atmosphere. At this 'SUMMIT' ( Which implies someone on it knows what they are talking about) the ANAEROBIC DIGESTOR system used so successful in France, Germany and Denmark, is not even on the agenda. (Beginning to sound like the ice-rink). Should this Country (Which includes Richmond ) not comply with the Directive it will be fined £500,000 per day until it does. I presume a proportion of this will be levied on Richmond's long suffering Council tax and Ratepayers.As far as I can discover Richmond has also done nothing TO PROMOTE Anaerobic Digestion, which it could do locally without sending anything to Bedford, providing of course, it even knows what it is.
