I must apologise for my ignorance but until I just went on the Council's web site I did not know that Cllr Whittall is this year's Deputy Mayor.

Maybe I am old fashioned but I was of the opinion that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were strictly independent of party politics and all matters of controversy during their year of office.

How then does Cllr Whittall square his required silence on political matters with his postings on this site over the last couple of weeks and others over the last few months on Twickenham-online.

While no one looking at this site would wish to put a gag on political expression the independence of the Chair is a vital element of our democracy.
