I have severe bunions. I have been evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon who is known for foot surgeries and a highly qualified podiatric surgeon.
I will make my own desicion about this. However, the two have given me very different approachs to the surgery.
Foot in question: A very severe bunion. When the foot is not weight bearing, all of the toes are aligned and flat albeit very angled. For the past six months when I weight bear, toe 3 crosses over toe 4 but ONLY when I weight bear.
Orthopaedic opinion: Correct the great toe with internal pin after bone cut and alignment. Then do resections on toe 2,3 and possibly 4.
I made it very clear to him that toe 3 and 4 have only been crossing over for 6 mos. and only with weight bearing.
Podiatrist opinion: Bone cut to great toe with external pins. His words " the toes crossing over are not technically hammer toes." i assume because they are not permanently fixed yet. Toes two and three bone cuts with internal pins. His words " If I don't do it this way you will be back here in two years. "
I am inclined to go with the podiatrist who seems to really know what he is talking about.
As I have stated before, I will make up my own mind about this. I just thought WOW this is not easy stuff to decide on.
