It certainly SOUNDS like nerve dysfunction, but it is unclear from the information at hand whether the burning is directly related to the injury, to its treatment or imay be totally coincidental. As it only occurs at night, when ostensibly he is in bed, there may be either a positional component or the fact that there is limited sensory input at night may more readily allow perception of the burning sensation. Certainly, if a cast has been applied, it should be monitored for over-tightness and irritation. Ask your doctor about the possible use of Capsaicin Cream. It contains the active ingredient in chili peppers which makes them hot. Initially, it too will cause a burning sensation, but over time, it may desensitize nerve ending which are malfunctioning. It is sometimes used in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy pain with varying degrees of success. But be sure to check with your son's doctor first.

There are also a number of systemic medications which are sometimes useful in peripheral neuropathies, but I would recommended first attempting to pinpointing the cause of the problem and treating that if possible rather than simply looking for palliative relief. Time may be of the essence.
