Resolution of swelling is hard to predict in any one individual. There are many factors that will influence the reduction of swelling in stress fractures and other injuries. Overall health, age, weight, activity and protection of the injured area are all important to consider.

Depending on what is being done with your stress fractures, swelling should reduce in 2-4 weeks but in some instances it may last for several months.

Elevation, ice, moderate compression, contrast baths and protection of the healing bones are all helpful in reduction of the swelling.

One thing to remember, swelling is a natural part of tissue injury and is actually a part of the early phase of healing so it will likely take care of itself if you are doing your part to protect the injured tissues.
