Hello, I would like some advice about a lump I have on my left ankle. It's located on the outter side of the left ankle on or maybe a bit below the bone.

I first noticed it around March of this year and after some pain went to the ER in May. They took an xray in the ER, told me my ankle was not broken gave me a brace and sent me on my way. I followed up with my family doctor who told me it was probably a cyst and I couldn't possibly have pain from it. So finally I made an appointment with a podiatrist, which I seen this morning. He took a needle to it and said it's not a cyst but rather a hard mass and repeated several times I need to have it removed. I don't have insurance so he recommended me to a podiatry clinic in my area.

My question is this, are they taking the proper measures? Should I have it removed or should an MRI be done on it first? I would like to be prepared going into this appointment since I will be dealing with student. I am having a lot of pain in my ankle today which I believe is from the needle, so i'm concerned about damage from them removing it.

One last thing, what could this lump possibly be? It's about the size of a pea but it doesn't feel completely round, almost like a partially flattened pea. And should I be concerned enough to act fast on it because i'm sure it will take months to get into the clinic.

Thank you in advance for any advice offered.
~Lucy
