As the pain is felt on the dorsum of the foot when the toe is actively dorsiflexed, it COULD be tendonitis of the extensor tendon(s), but you have not shared anything which would lead me to agree with the diagnosis of plantar fasciitis. If the same dorsal pain is also present on passive dorsiflexion, it probably is not tendonitis either. Pain which is elicited on dorsal palpation of the metatarsal-toe joint is often indicitive of bursitis or capsulitis, though burning sensations are not generally associated with these, and I don't know how to comment about the "exploding" feeling. I think that this condition should be readily diagnosable and treatable by the average podiatrist with a hands-on physical examination and history alone, and generally should not require high-tech diagnostic modalities. But not only should the immediate symptoms be targeted, but their underlying, likely mechanical cause(s). On the other hand, the Indocin may be successful in at least temporarily alleviating or mitigating the symptoms, even without a confirmed diagnosis, but it is not a medication which should be considered for long-term or repetitive use.
