Hi. I am currently recovering from bunion surgery. I just wanted to tell you not to be afraid. It really wasn't that big of a deal at all. I am 3 weeks out of surgery, and although I cannot walk on my whole foot yet, I have no more pain. The surgery itself is quick and totally painless. I would recommend it if you are having pain from your bunion on a regular basis. Trust me, I am a weenie and was afraid, but after I had it done, I am glad. I would definitely do it again!!

Elizabeth . . Your words of reassurance to the patient fearful of bunion surgery are comforting. But I must caution the reader that it is the rare bunion surgery that is "totally painless," and if I've learned nothing else in doing this sort of surgery for a many years . . . it would be, never EVER promote ANY surgery as "painless." Pain is a VERY individualize phenomenon, and that the level of discomfort which may drive one patient over the hill is frequently laughed at by another. I think that EVERY patient should go into surgery acknowledging that cutting into the body and especially bones is almost always accompanied by some level of discomfort. I have removed splinters from some patients who then wanted crutches, and I have done extensive bone surgeries on others who then asked, "Did you REALLY do anything?" So, its very nice that you had no pain (though, if that's really true, I don't understand why you can't walk on the whole foot yet). But it is far better for a patient to anticipated a fair amount of pain and have less than expected, than to have just a little pain when none was predicted.
